Jon Sands
Vice-President, Business Development
Jon Sands, Vice President of Business Development, joined Roush Fenway Racing's marketing team in 2001 after excelling in numerous areas of motorsports marketing.
Prior to joining Roush Fenway, Sands had developed a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable public relations and marketing specialists in the motorsports industry. After college, he honed his racing business skills during a five-year stint as Director of Marketing and Media Relations at Phoenix's Firebird International Raceway.
In 1992, Sands' focus shifted to the business of NASCAR after being recruited as an account executive by New York-based Cohn & Wolfe marketing agency (a Young & Rubicam company) to oversee the Pennzoil NASCAR Cup Series program. Sands went on to hold senior-level positions in sponsorship marketing and media relations with several top teams in the sport, including five years as Marketing and Media Relations Director for the Coors Brewing Company's Cup Series endeavor (Team SABCO).
At Roush Fenway, his responsibilities include securing primary sponsorships as well as developing specialized, integrated marketing communications programs that make such sponsorship programs work and profitable for the client. He is also responsible for the continued development of cutting-edge processes for sponsorship acquisition, while generating and advancing relationships with companies not already involved in the sport.
Sands and Executive Vice President Robin Johnson teamed in 2002 to create arguably one of the best (if not the best) sponsorship rosters in professional sports. The duo charted unprecedented territory by securing long-term deals with companies like AAA Automotive Clubs, 3M Company, Arby's Restaurants, Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Dish Network, and many others - all new to NASCAR sponsorship.
Sands earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing Communications (PR/journalism with an engineering emphasis) from Arizona State University.
When not at the office or the track, Sands can be found coaching youth baseball; adding to his tally of more than 550 miles hiked in the Grand Canyon; snow skiing; river rafting; cycling; and following ASU Sun Devil football. He enjoys community involvement serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen, and volunteers by counseling individuals and families dealing with cancer.
Sands and his wife, Christine, reside in Mooresville, N.C. The couple has three children ranging in age from 9 to 14.
